Description

This position provides epidemiologic support for the Lifetime Surveillance of Astronaut Health project and the Flight and Medical Operations Division at NASA Johnson Space Center.

The incumbent will:

  • Assemble and prepare datasets
  • Analyze medical and environmental exposure data
  • Generate reports, presentations, and publications
  • Provide evidence to support clinical care
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Support occupational surveillance, operational investigations, and scientific research

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Extract and manipulate medical data from electronic databases in a cloud-based environment. Prepare data for analyses, including visualization, using statistical programs. Document methodology and results.
  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews, including identifying relevant publications and summarizing scientific findings.
  • Analyze medical data and generate reports, presentations, and publications. Convey results to managers and project leaders.
  • Generate reports to support clinical care and epidemiologic analyses of medical data.
  • Participate as an epidemiology SME in assessing health risks during spaceflight.
  • Ensure data quality control and assurance during analyses. Collaborate with epidemiologists and biostatisticians to identify and resolve issues.
  • Prepare materials for presentations and poster sessions for internal audiences and the scientific community.
  • Support the development of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
  • Automate recurring reports using statistical software and data mining tools to enhance efficiency.
  • Maintain current CITI Human Subjects Research - Biomedical Research certification and complete other necessary trainings.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical and personal information to which access has been granted.
  • Provide weekly status reports of work activities to the supervisor.
  • Perform other tasks as directed.
Requirements

 

Education & Experience:

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Data Science, Health Informatics, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in extracting, manipulating, and analyzing clinical data using statistical software, as well as preparing reports and presentations.

Desired:

  • Experience querying electronic medical records (EMR) and other relational databases, manipulating large datasets, and working with raw, unclean data.
  • Three years of data analysis experience, preferably using clinical healthcare data.
  • Experience or coursework in risk assessment.

Skills & Training:

Required:

  • Proficiency in database management, including data extraction, cleaning, and auditing.
  • Experience developing data visualizations in Tableau, Power BI, or other visualization software.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • Effective planning, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both in small teams and independently.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments and effectively prioritize work projects.
  • Highly developed organizational skills and attention to detail.

Desired:

  • Experience with electronic medical records and data resulting from this type of record, or experience with human health data.
  • Experience working with collaboration tools such as Teams, SharePoint, OneNote, and bibliographic software such as EndNote.
  • Experience creating Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG) to model probability, connectivity, and causality.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and legislative requirements related to personally identifiable information (PII) and data privacy laws (e.g., Privacy Act of 1974, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), etc.).
  • Experience extracting, manipulating, and analyzing data in cloud-based environments. Working knowledge of building analytical data models using R, Python, Scala, or other relevant cloud services such as AWS SageMaker or AWS Comprehend.
