POSITION TITLE: RVRS Data Modernization Epidemiologist 
LOCATION: Hybrid
POSITION END DATE: 6/30/25
SALARY: up to $80,000 (plus benefits)


OVERVIEW

The CDC Foundation is seeking an enthusiastic and proactive epidemiologist to support the surveillance and evaluation efforts of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) Data Management Unit within the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics. This position will maintain the Commonwealth’s core statewide longitudinal natality and mortality SAS datasets. The epidemiologist will also provide population health data dissemination to internal and external stakeholders in the form of Population Health Information Tool (PHIT) dashboards.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

•Master’s degree in public health or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
•At least three (3) years of relevant work experience performing epidemiologic work or work in a closely related field.
•Understanding of the principles of epidemiology, epidemiologic research methods and techniques.
•Ability to maintain/manage databases, construct data files, and perform data edits/cleaning as needed.
•Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of epidemiologic and demographic data to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
•Ability to calculate age-adjusted, crude, and age- and sex-specific rates of disease or exposure.
•Extensive experience in data analysis using SAS.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise and understandable manner.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

•Experience implementing qualitative and quantitative research methods used in public health practice 
•Understanding and knowledge of managing large data systems.
•Knowledge of medical records terminology.
•Experience handling and maintaining protected health information (PHI)
•Experience with the following software: SAS, Tableau, Excel, ArcGIS, NVivo
•Proficiency in SAS coding and the manipulation of data utilizing SAS.
•Experience with data visualization best practices.
•Experience with Tableau.
•Ability to establish a good rapport and deal tactfully with others.
•Capacity to perform well under pressure and remain organized, following‐through on priority deliverables while working on several projects simultaneously.
•Knowledge of survey development and use of data collection software (e.g., RedCap, Microsoft Forms).
•Familiarity with statewide surveillance data sources (e.g., BRFSS, YRBS, case mix, vital records)
•Experience analyzing and contextualizing data within the context of historical and structural racism.
•Understanding of issues relative to surveillance data systems
•Willingness and ability to learn, develop, and apply new analytic data skills and technical skills (e.g., GIS mapping software, propensity scoring).
•Experience presenting complex data and statistical analyses to technical and lay audiences via poster or oral presentations.
•Experience preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
•Excellent oral and written communication skills


RESPONSIBILITIES

•Serve as the data administrator/manager for SAS historical vital records data.
•Participate in relevant Data Standards workgroups to ensure RVRS needs are reflected and compliance with the finalized standards.
• Maintain data documentation that allows mapping across longitudinal datasets.
•Establish communication channels and methods for updating internal RVRS data users of changes and updates to datasets.
•In consultation with the Epidemiology Unit Director and the Registrar, assist in the development of PHIT Tableau dashboards, including defining project scope, user needs, and ensuring optimal functionality.
•Provide training, supervision, and direction to related epidemiology and research staff.
•Provides epidemiologic support, statistical analyses, and subject matter expertise for new and ongoing projects.

Roles and responsibilities listed above may be expanded upon or updated to match priorities and needs, once written approval is received by both the CDC Foundation and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in order to best support the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in their public health programming.
