Fellow duties also include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting statistical data and preparing epidemiologic reports. The applied epidemiology experience is supplemented by competency based professional development trainings and comradery-building programming.

Hired into the Rollins Epidemiology Fellows Program, fellows serve as early-career MPH-level epidemiologists for a two-year term within one of Georgia’s 18 local health districts or at the Georgia Department of Public Health. This position is not located at Emory, but rather at Georgia Health District 1-2 North Georgia in Dalton, GA.
Fellowship positions are located at the health district site and require in person attendance. To successfully complete and graduate from the Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship, fellows are minimally expected to complete an oral presentation, a surveillance evaluation/quality improvement project, and a significant data analysis project over the course of the two years. Fellows are expected to work on projects and activities related to seven Core Competencies:
Examples of projects include:
1. Health disparities profile for health district. The final deliverable is a formal report summarizing findings with actionable recommendations on how to reduce health disparities in the district. This project would include quantitative data collection and analysis regarding many notifiable health conditions in the district, patient demographics, and EMR reviews. Additionally, the fellow would conduct qualitative data collection and analysis from private health care providers and community centers. This data and guidance will be presented to the local boards of health across the district.
2. Assessment of resource allocation priorities from the pre-pandemic era to the present. The goal of this project is to identify where shifts in public health clinic priorities and resources are appropriate based on infection trends. The fellow will assess quantitative health department data to identify trends in illness rates, patient needs, and clinic resources. The fellow would use qualitative data from health department staff to determine priorities and emerging trends. The fellow would present findings to district leadership and additional community decision makers.
