GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  

The Wyoming Department of Health, Public Health Division, is seeking a maternal and child health epidemiologist to provide epidemiologic support to the Maternal and Child Health Unit. The Unit’s mission is to partner with communities and families to promote and advocate for optimal health and well-being, using a public health approach. This position involves analyzing maternal and child health-related data from various sources, preparing reports and presentations, and collaborating with internal and external partners to inform public health interventions. This position will also assist with program evaluation and performance monitoring efforts. Topics of interest include but are not limited to, maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, perinatal health, and pediatric mental health.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Provide epidemiologic support for the Maternal and Child Health Unit through data collection, reporting, evaluation, and translation. 
  • Identify sources of maternal and child health data, conduct analyses, identify gaps, and provide interpretations to assist in the development of interventions and recommendations, obtaining funding, and ongoing education, promotion, prevention, and quality improvement projects. 
  • Collect and analyze data from various surveillance systems that monitor and assess maternal and child health in Wyoming such as hospital discharge records, emergency department visits, vital statistics, and survey data.
  • Maintain and update maternal and child health surveillance systems to monitor trends and identify emerging issues.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of program evaluation in collaboration with program partners and of program metrics to measure progress toward maternal and child health goals. 
  • Produce and distribute fact sheets, data briefs, reports, and dashboards to distribute to partners and the public to communicate maternal and child health epidemiology data. 
  • Collaborate with internal program partners and other external partners to support maternal and child health initiatives. 

Qualifications



PREFERENCES: 

A Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Science, Social Services, or Statistics will also be considered. 


KNOWLEDGE: 

  • Ability to carry out epidemiologic studies and develop and evaluate surveillance systems
  • Ability to analyze and use data and results from research and evaluation to formulate interventions and make decisions
  • Ability to collaborate with other researchers to investigate a potential public health problem and accomplish surveillance objectives. 
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, written, and interpersonal
  • Knowledge of current concepts of injury prevention, program evaluation, needs assessment, project management, and the use of data to drive decision-making
  • Knowledge of complex epidemiologic surveillance methods, including surveillance evaluation and data quality
  • Experience with various software applications including SAS, R, Excel, Microsoft Office, and Tableau
  • Ability to multitask and manage overlapping deadlines
  • Knowledge of the public health and research community in Wyoming and surrounding states.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc.
